PSHE
Intent
At Harpur Hill Primary School, we believe that PSHE learning is a crucial part of a child’s education. PSHE enables pupils to understand and respect our common humanity; its diversity and its differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. At Harpur Hill Primary School, we aim to equip children with essential skills for life; we intend to develop the whole child through carefully planned and resourced lessons that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing.
When children leave Harpur Hill Primary school, we intend that they do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We intend to prepare the children to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and a belief that anything is possible if they set their mind to it. In an ever-changing world, we believe that it is important that they are aware of different factors that will affect their world and that they are educated to deal with these whilst developing strong mental and physical health.
Implementation
As a school, we have chosen to follow the Derbyshire PSHE Matters scheme of work, which supports teachers to teach PSHE from Early Years to Year 6. PSHE is taught as a discrete lesson as well as across the curriculum. For example, areas of learning such as online safety are taught within the computing curriculum. Our whole school ethos supports the curriculum and principles, which are delivered within sessions such as school assemblies. PSHE does not just exist within the curriculum. The wide range of activities and experiences that we provide at Harpur Hill Primary School occur beyond the curriculum allowing pupils to contribute to their school life and community. We believe it is important to develop a Growth Mindset in order to help pupils build resilience, independence and confidence. We encourage children to embrace challenge and foster a love of learning
PSHE Matters organises the curriculum into 12 themes:
Being Healthy – including the importance of looking after our physical and mental health
Drug Education – including how to manage risk and peer influences
Difference and Diversity –including challenging stereotypes
Being Me –including identity and community
Exploring Emotions – including how to recognise and manage feelings and emotions

Each area of learning is covered in Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and again in Upper Key Stage 2.
EYFS
PSHE in the Early Years Foundation Stage underpins personal development. It enables children to build strong, warm and supportive relationships with adults and encourages children to understand their own feelings and those of others. Through the PSHE curriculum, children are supported to manage their emotions whilst developing a positive sense of self whilst developing confidence in their abilities. Children are supported during interactions with others, encouraging them to make good friendships, co-operate and resolve conflicts peacefully.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, the curriculum is organised into the same 12 themes and align with the Early Learning Goals; Managing Self, Self Regulation, Building Relationships

Why Does PSHE Matter? (Sept 2024)
Impact
By the time a pupil leaves Harpur Hill, they will have developed the vocabulary and confidence needed to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings in a climate of openness, trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek the support of others.
Children will be able to apply their understanding of society to their everyday interactions, from the classroom to the wider community of which they are a part. The PSHE curriculum prioritises physical and mental health and wellbeing, providing children with skills to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing needs, practise self-care and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them.
PSHE education at Harpur Hill aims to ensure that that all children are able to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed at school and in the wider world.
