Religious Education

Curriculum Intent

Through the delivery of our RE curriculum, we want our children to become resilient, accepting, mindful and inquisitive learners. Our RE curriculum allows children to discover and gain an insight into religions within the world that we live. We believe that the teaching of RE is vital for children to understand others’ beliefs and make connections between their own values and beliefs, as well as developing their own world view. It is our role to ensure pupils are able to develop their knowledge by being inquisitive and asking questions about the world around them, and through providing high quality learning experiences.

Curriculum Implementation

RE is taught in a weekly session and follows the Derbyshire and Derby City Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (2020 – 2025). The teaching of RE allows all pupils to explore, understand and express their own religious response to religious approaches to life.

The RE curriculum:

  • Offers opportunities for personal reflection and pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is encouraged as they examine the significance of their learning in relation to themselves and others.
  • Enables pupils to explore their own beliefs (whether they are religious or not), ideas, feelings, experiences and values in the light of what they learn.
  • Encourages empathy and respect.
  • Enables pupils to develop their own sense of identity and belonging.
  • Promotes respect for the right of others to hold different beliefs, values and ideas.
  • Helps pupils to have informed understanding of potential political, social, moral and world issues they may face as they grow up.

Curriculum Impact

By the end of their time at Harpur Hill Primary School, the children will:

  • Have a stronger awareness of the world around them and will be mindful of the beliefs of others.
  • Feel they are valued as individuals and that their beliefs are valued and celebrated.
  • Have experienced the enjoyment of the RE curriculum, which will promote creativity, achievement, confidence and inquisitive minds.
  • Feel safe to learn new things and share their beliefs with others in an accepting environment.
  • Leave our school with the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
